MFA Lab Series: Spring Awakening
May 25 – 27, 2018
Hal & Martha Hyer Wallis Theater
1949 Campus Drive, Evanston
Adapted and Directed by Alex Mallory
From "Frühlings Erwachen" by Frank Wedekind
Betrayed by their well-intentioned parents, six teenagers struggle with sexual and moral awakening in a culture of ignorance and repression. Wedekind's 1891 classic German tragedy addresses the plight of coming of age with acute directness, and this original adaptation by MFA Director Alex Mallory highlights its urgent and revolutionary exploration of adolescence, education, and generational conflict.
ALEX MALLORY (Director and Adapter) is a second year director in the MFA program at Northwestern interested in stories that explore the intersection of trauma and identity in the communal setting of the theatre. Directing highlights include GOLIATH and DIJLA WAL FURAT at Wild Project, FAITH at Culture Project's Women Center Stage Festival, and THE REFUGE PROJECT for Bedlam MadLAB, all developed with Poetic Theater Productions in New York City, where she was Co-Artistic Director from 2011-2015. Her work with PTP has led her to work closely with military veterans as a director and facilitator with The Telling Project, the Veteran Artist Program, DE-CRUIT, and LaGuardia Community College. Most recently she assisted Anna D. Shapiro on THE MINUTES at Steppenwolf. She holds a BA in Drama from Stanford University, where she received the Louis Sudler Prize in Creative Arts and the Sherifa Omade Edoga Prize for work involving social issues.
