We are on sacred ground. Northwestern University is on the traditional homelands of the people of the Council of Three Fires—the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa—as well as the Menominee, Miami, and Ho-Chunk nations. Before it was stolen from them through colonization and forced removal, this land was a site of trade, travel, gathering, and healing for more than a dozen other native tribes. The state of Illinois is still home to more than 100,000 tribal members. In the spirit of healing and making amends for the harm that was done, we acknowledge the native and indigenous peoples who called this land home. We pledge ourselves as members of the Northwestern School of Communication to turn our statements into action and build better relationships with native and indigenous communities in Evanston, in Chicago, and throughout the region.
The fact that we continue to live with the repercussions of centuries-old systems of oppression like settler colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy is…trash. By creating false senses of hierarchy and dominance, fueling greed and entitlement, and triggering anger and hatred, the toxicity of these systems can poison the relationship we have with ourselves, each other, and the planet.
Whether we like it or not, this poison seeps into the soul. Too many of us have experienced what it’s like to forget who we are while attempting to survive oppression– to become so blinded by rage and scarcity that liberation and abundance feel like an impossible dream. Some of us have found ourselves upholding these systems, seduced by privilege and power. In either case, we are faced with a choice. We can add to the trash or process and repurpose it into a hope for life. The Tempest is a story about how we reignite the soul after toxic human systems have corrupted it, how we realign with nature, and how we link love with justice to move toward collective liberation.
My invitation to anyone who chooses to go on this journey with us is to be willing to wade through the darkness, to push against the trashy limits of liberation, to imagine a thriving natural world where we are all free, and to take that step into that future together.
Special thanks to my mother Essie, Grandmothers Joyce and Jearlean, and all the women in my family who embody Agape Love. To every mother and parental figure who has dreams bigger than their children could ever imagine. To my mentors, Anna Shapiro, Whitney White, Shana Cooper, and Dr. Cristal Chanelle Truscott. Thank you for your wisdom, guidance, and inspiration. To the community of artists gathered around this story, I will always value you, your artistry, and your power.
